Sheila Meisel on the Bitterroot in Montana
Paige,
Tell Twink that it’s the ultimate in “zen” catch n’ release!
I have been busy as usual here in Montana.
Fishing on the Clark Fork has slowed down considerably as the weather is much warmer than usual. It’s a guessing game all day as to what they are taking, if anything at all. But we still manage to boat many fish each day here at Clark Fork River Outfitters.
I’ve been fishing & rowing with other guides & outfitters all week on new sections of the Clark Fork and spent two days on the Bitterroot. Fishing on the Bitterroot is off the hook with all fish being boated in the 17″ – 20″ range and all big fatties! Caught one on Thursday that spit out another fish he was eating as I pulled him to the surface. What hogs!
Both the Clark Fork & Bitterroot are doing well still on hoppers & turk’s turantula’s during the heat of the day. Morning & evening we’ve been doing well on Quigley’s Cripple, Purple Haze, Large Caddis Patterns & as always the Royal Wolfe.
First student arrived for the fall guide school. Let the abuse begin! Ha Ha Ha (evil laugh)
Pictures attached of my most recent exploits.
tight lines fellow hookers,
Sheila Meisel

Lisa tying knots
The hookers gathered last night and had a great time. Lisa played with learning knots, Twink fly selection, and we all learned how to cast in the dark! Twink also had a lesson in falling in the river with her waders on. This gave us a whole new perspective on floating the Kinni! A good lesson learned with a campfire just steps away!
From Carrie: I have not made a meeting yet, but I do plan on coming tonight or next thursday… work is kicking my butt. However, I do have photos from fishing with my dad in AZ in March on the Salt River. Thanks Carrie Jacobson
From Sheila:
paige,
This hooker is still in Montana guiding. Have managed two days off in the past month. One day I checked out a high mountain lake in a kick boat for some brookies.
Today I went on a fishing excursion to fish the north fork of the blackfoot. River Runs Through it!
Hike in at least a mile, lots of boulder hopping. This is bull trout land; didn’t fish for those of course as it’s a big no no but i did see some in the river. at least 30″ fish, spawning i believe. fishing was really hard, no significant hatches to speak of and hit and miss on strikes. I was not able to land any of the 5 that hit my fly. I think they were bulls so probably a good thing.
Guided a client into a 20″ rainbow three days ago.
Getting proficient at rowing drift boats.
Gave some casting lessons to some novices from Spokane.
Got down in the 30s last couple of night, colors starting to change.
Fishing on the Clark Fork has been excellent; all big fish coming out the past 2 weeks, all on dries! what a great time of year when you can get big trout to come to the surface. Big PMD’s, very small adams. Starting to see some mahogany dunns.
have fun guys!

Flowers from Margaret for the Ladies Club!

We had a great turnout last night for our Kinni Hookers Club! All new gals too!
There was Gail who is new to Hudson that we met at a monthly TU meeting last winter.
Margaret who is active in TCTU and brought the club a beautiful bouquet of flowers! Lisa who took our fly fish 101 class a couple of weeks ago. Terrie who lives in Kansas but travels to the Twin Cities a couple of times a month. And of course Janine and myself. Our group is growing…another gal joined today that took our ladies fly fish 101 course a few years ago!
Club note: We will be meeting here at the fly shop on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd at 6:30 a.m. to head out fly fishing. Let us know if you can come along. Bring your coffee mugs.
